The way I've worked with the earthy tones and textures here suggests both decay and beauty, transformation and permanence.
As I am "landing" in my new role as a part-time painter, this piece literally and metaphorically demonstrates me finding a distinctive voice: just as an aircraft carefully descends toward its destination, I'm making my considered approach to my artistic journey.
Best case, the worn, rustic aesthetic feels authentic and grounded, much like my own approach to entering this new chapter of my creative life.
I use mixed media, combining traditional painting techniques with metallurgical processes.
Obviously, I try to control the natural chemical reactions while still allowing for organic development of the textures and patterns. The result has both intentionality and unpredictability, which gives the work its authenticity.
The varying stages of oxidation visible in the piece—from the deeper russet browns to those brighter orange patches and the darker, more weathered areas—aim to create a sense of time being captured on the canvas. As if not just painting a surface, but cultivating a living patina.
