In Rickety, I explore the interplay between decay and reconstitution:
I subjected the canvas to deliberate trauma, burning holes that I later mended with fragments of another painting; creating a layered history of destruction and repair. The surface evolved into a turbulent landscape of oxidized browns and blacks, punctuated by flashes of turquoise and exposed pale areas that emerge like geological specimens through corrosion.
I chose the title to evoke a sense of precarious balance, which manifests in the tension between the canvas's wounds and its restoration. Through aggressive material manipulation and considered repair, I wanted the piece to speak to cycles of breakdown and rebuilding.
On January 20th, 2025, I stood before the piece thinking "I have nothing to add;" a moment of completion that coincidentally aligned with a day of significant political transition in America.
While the work wasn't created as political commentary, this timing lent an unexpected resonance to its themes of deterioration and reconstruction.
Yet Rickety remains, at its core, an exploration of material transformation and the artistic process of unmaking and remaking.
