This painting emerged from literally trashing a boring painting with household materials. There's just something great about using kitchen enamel and spray paint in that moment of creative frustration. It's like the artistic equivalent of necessity is the mother of invention, or in this case, frustration is the mother of innovation.
The scale really allows the raw, expressive qualities to breathe.
What's particularly striking is how it actually seems to capture that moment of creative chaos, that somehow still feels intentional.
Sometimes you have to be willing to destroy something safe or boring to create something with real energy and life.
The piece is titled At Sea.
The literal visual elements could evoke something oceanic with those blues and the fluid, weathered quality, but more importantly, it captures that psychological state of being all at sea; that feeling of being unmoored, uncertain, yet somehow finding your way through it.
I find learning to trust the process one of the hardest, but most valuable lessons in art. Sometimes you just have to let go of the shore, so to speak, and trust that something meaningful will emerge from the chaos.
