This painting emerged from literally trashing a boring painting with household materials. There's just something great about using kitchen enamel and spray paint in that moment of creative frustration. It's like the artistic equivalent of necessity is the mother of invention, or in this case, frustration is the mother of innovation.
The scale really allows the raw, expressive qualities to breathe.
What's particularly striking is perhaps how that moment of creative chaos, in hindsight (and on the canvas) still somehow feels intentional.
I've titled the piece At Sea.
The literal visual elements could evoke something oceanic with those blues and the fluid, weathered quality, but more importantly, it captures that psychological state of being all at sea; that feeling of being unmoored, uncertain, yet somehow finding your way through it.
I find learning to trust the process one of the hardest, but most valuable lessons in art. Sometimes you just have to let go of the shore, so to speak, and trust that something meaningful will emerge from the chaos.
That is to say that for me this piece is not just a painting, but rather an artistic turning point; a tangible reminder that some of your best work can come from moments when you feel most lost or frustrated. As long as you stay open to the unexpected directions it might take you, that is.
